Dan Severn Vs Ken Shamrock ?
March 3, 2009 by admin
DreamFighters.com was able to catch up with UFC Legend, Dan Severn to talk about a few things, and to look back on the progress of MMA.
DreamFighters.com: Dan thanks for taking the time to speak to me today, what have you been up to lately?
Dan Severn: I am doing everything from MMA seminars and instructing at my gym to substitute teaching (from 2nd grade to high school). I am also a volunteer coach at the local high school, as my son is a student there. I own Michigan Sports Camps, a 10,000 square foot facility in Coldwater MI where we train students in amateur wrestling, freestyle wrestling, Greco Roman wresting, professional wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai and of course mixed martial arts.
DreamFighters.com: Any chance we can expect you back in the cage?
Dan Severn: I never left. I have been competing on a regular basis since 1994 in many non-televised promotions.
DreamFighters.com: Your old competition ken shamrock is still fighting. What do you think of that?
Dan Severn: I am in the process of planning my own retirement tour and I think that there should be a “rubber” match between Ken Shamrock and myself. I say “rubber match” and not “re-match” because we fought twice, I won one and Ken won one. I would definitely welcome the opportunity.
DreamFighters.com: How has the ufc and mma changed since you fought and how it is now?
Dan Severn: The UFC has improved immensely. The UFC has changed more in terms of the quality of competitors. In the beginning many of the fighters were one dimensional. They were either a striker or a grappler. Now MMA fighters are well-rounded. Because of the rules and regulations that have evolved over time, they have had to improve in different areas.
DreamFighters.com: You fought in Pridefc in Japan. How was that different from the UFC?
Dan Severn: The main difference was the ring vs. the cage. I prefer the cage over the ring because you can get entangled in the ropes, fall through the ropes etc. I have fallen out of two rings during the course of my career. lol
DreamFighters.com: Who do you think is the best fighter in the right world now?
Dan Severn: I would have to say Fedor, when you look at what he did to Tim Sylvia, and recently to Andre Arlovski.
DreamFighters.com: If you can recall the first time you fought in the UFC, can you tell us what it was like? (Atmosphere, nerves, the show itself)
Dan Severn: Oh, I can definitely recall it. I played it over and over in my mind before I even walked out there. I can tell you that I was not nervous, as I had been in front of large crowds before during my amateur and professional wrestling career. I also knew in my mind that I had been hurt far worse in my amateur and professional wrestling career than what has ever happened to me in a cage fight. I knew if things went bad I could always tap out or tell the referee that I had had enough fun for the night.
DreamFighters.com: Did you ever get along with Ken?
Dan Severn: Honestly I do not know Ken. I have never had a sit down conversation with him. You can’t judge a book by its cover, you have to get to know someone at a certain level before you can determine if you like them or not.
DreamFighters.com: Can you recall any incidents with fighters you witnessed in the UFC or Pride?
Dan Severn: At the very first Ultimate Ultimate Competition, where they brought some of us together for a no holds barred 8 man tournament, they had security assigned to each individual fighter’s camp. They had to do this to prevent fighting outside of the competition. It was the highest volatility show that I have ever been in.
DreamFighters.com: Is there anything else that you would like to tell your fans about?
Dan Severn: ost people know me about my professional MMA and Wrestling career, which is a very small portion of what Dan Severn is all about. If you would like to see what I am involved with and continue to be involved with, please go to Dansevern.com.
DreamFighters.com: Dan thank you very much for taking the time to speak to me at dreamfighters - we wish you the best of luck!
Dan Severn: Thank you!

Dan is such a class act and one of my Fav’s of all time for sure. Always entertaining and always there to fight, how can you not like The Beast. No doubt about it, even at his age he’d tear Shamrock a new one, hell Im pretty sure Severn would school fair majority of UFC’s roster today..
